A second application for a dog kennel south of Lloyd Lake received the same fate
as the first and was refused by the Foothills MD Council.
At a public hearing on Thursday, council refused an application for a 40-dog kennel
on land owned by Ed Poffenroth. Poffenroth and Tom Bratree made a similar application
in another area, but were also refused.
Despite assurances from the applicants that the kennel building would be soundproof,
there was substantial opposition from neighboring landowners including a petition
signed by 90 residents.
'The area is becoming more densely populated so I don't think it is the place for
a commercial venture,' said Susan Harmon. 'The MD has no noise bylaw so it is unfair
for the municipality to ask us to accept this on blind faith.'
Poffenroth and Bratree proposed a two-acre site for a kennel that would house up
to 40 dogs.
Bratree, a renowned breeder, said the facility would be state-of-art.
'We don't want to cause problems with our neighbors,' said Bratree who had 33 letters
of support. 'We want to set the standard of excellence.'
Although the applicants said the building would be soundproof, the neighbors said
they were concerned with the noise when the dogs were outside exercising and the
additional traffic on the local roads.
Council refused the application due to access concerns, traffic and incompatablity
with land use in the area.
