Home schooled students in and around Okotoks,
recently showcased their greatest accomplishments of the year at an awards ceremony.
Projects from computer programming and 3D models to artwork, report writing and food
samples were all on display at Okotoks Alliance Church.
After families and friends had toured the exhibits, medals were presented to each
student. This concluded an exciting year of group activities and provided recognition
for the creativity and enthusiasm each student put into their schoolwork.
Weekly enrichment activity classes of gymnastics, swimming, art, drama, science and
novel studies have also provided a delightful addition to home school learning.
'Students get all the benefits of a morning of one-on-one tutoring for their core
subjects, yet can enjoy the companionship of others on one or two afternoons each
week,' said instructor Gayle Crouser who teaches the novel study class at The Okotoks
Library.
Activities are expanding even more in the fall to include Mad Science, the Book It
reading program, a Millennium Project, Cultural Day and Literary Fair.
Mountain Shadows and the Okotoks Recreation Centre will also continue to offer their
sports programs in the early afternoons especially for home schoolers. Approximately
150 children from pre-school to junior high took part in the programs this year.
If you would like information about the fall schedule, call Home Schooling Coop coordinators
