It was a day that Grade 12 students at Oilfields
High School will probably carry with them for the rest of their lives -- graduation
day.
On June 12, the graduating class of 1999 shared in their emotions of happiness and
relief as they crossed the stage one by one, in front of family and friends, to receive
their rolled up reminders of life in high school.
As the processional carried the dapperly-dressed students to the stage via Garth
Brooks' song The River, the thoughts of where the road will take them in the future
probably flashed in the minds of the 72 graduates as they made their way to the stage.
'This is the largest class we've ever had,' said counsellor Shelley Geran, who served
as futurist during the graduation ceremony.
After some heartfelt greetings were made by principal Bob Zerebecki, Foothills School
Division associate superintendent Jim Brandon and school division trustee Christopher
Paton-Gay, it was the graduates' turn to act upon their graduation theme, 'Reach
For The Stars.'
Grade 12 Citizenship Awards were presented to students Kelly Ashbacher, Krista Goss
and Quinn Page by teachers Janet Gilchrist, Bryan Brandford and Loriann Laube.
The Citizenship Award presentations were then followed by a tearful presentation
of the Terry Fox scholarship to Page by Zerebecki.
Valedictorian Stacie Slot offered her peers some words of wisdom about life after
high school and guest speaker Brandford offered the graduates some humorous albeit
thoughtful accounts of life during high school and a poignant statement to remember.
'Once a Driller, always a Driller,' Brandford said to a cheering graduating class
and audience.
