When a youngster comes home and tells his parents
he wants to shave his head the expected result is a stern reprimand, arguments about
foolish rebellion and quick march to the bedroom..
However, when nine-year-old Tim Broer came home and informed his parents he wanted
to go bald his parents had difficulty being mad at their son. In fact, they were
quite proud of him..
To raise funds for cancer research, Broer, a Grade 3 student at Big Rock School,
will be shaving his head on Saturday morning at the Okotoks Chamber of Commerce pancake
breakfast.
'I was surprised he wanted to pursue it,' said Broer's mother Laurel. 'It is unusual
for a boy to want to do this, but it just shows there are still good kids in the
world.'
Broer did not come up with the idea as a sudden brainstorm. The youngster was inspired
by his Grade 3 teacher Mr. Mouser who is shaving his head at Big Rock School on Friday.
Although, the student has not been impacted by cancer in his own personal life, the
sacrifice of his teacher was enough to convince him to participate in his own way.
'When Mr. Mouser said he was going to shave his head, I decided I should do the same
and raise some money for cancer research,' said Broer.
After he decided he wanted to go through with the hair removal, Broer's mother contacted
the Chamber of Commerce to see if he could amalgamate his project with another event.
The perfect union was the Sports Day weekend festivities.
Broer will have his golden mane removed at 8:30 am on Saturday at Rotary Park.
Prior to Saturday, Broer set a goal of raising $1,000 for cancer research. The Grade
3 student has already raised $350 as of Monday.
Although the big day is still four days away, Broer said the hair on the back of
his neck is already on end.
Are you nervous? He is asked.
'Yes,' he smiles.
What are going to do afterward?
'Wear a hat.'
