Oilers handcuff Bandits to win fourth straight

Okotoks Oilers webThe Okotoks Junior A Oilers more than handled a visit from some Bandits.

The Oilers scored six unanswered goals in downing the Brooks Bandits 6-1, Jan. 12 in Alberta Junior Hockey League action at the Centennial Arena in Okotoks.

It was the Oilers’ fourth-consecutive victory.

Justin Cochrane led the Oilers with two goals and an assist and was named the Oilers’ game star for his efforts.

Brandon Hoogenboom, Brett Adnum, Quinn Sproule and Ben Gamache also tallied goals for Okotoks.

Gamache’s goal was a short-handed effort in the final minute of play of the first period to give the Oilers a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Netminder Sean Cahill missed the shutout when Colin Scherger scored for the Bandits with four minutes left in third period. Cahill stopped 27 of 28 shots in the win.

The victory improved the Oilers’ record to 27-15-0-2. Their 56 points puts them in second place in the South Division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, five points behind the first-place Camrose Kodiaks.

Okotoks has two games at hand on the Kodiaks.

The Oilers’ next home game is Friday, Jan. 15 when the Canmore Eagles visit the Centennial Arena at 7 p.m.

Okotoks plays a crucial four-point game when they travel to Camrose to take on the Kodiaks Jan. 16.

In other Okotoks Oilers’ news, forward Derek Rodwell was selected as a captain for the South Division in the AJHL All-star game which will be played on Jan. 30 in Fort McMurray.

Rodwell will have plenty of teammates to travel with to Fort Mac. Sproule, Hoogenboom and Cahill were also named to the South all-star team.
