Trial to continue in Eden Valley domestic stabbing case
An Eden Valley man who said he was too high and drunk to remember beating and stabbing his common-law wife will continue his trial in November.
In early June the man admitted to beating his wife in their home following a night of drinking and cocaine use at a Calgary casino on the afternoon of Jan. 20.
When they returned home the man left with his wife’s prescription for Lectopam. He returned with a hairspray mixture. When he came back home he became angry and aggressive towards his wife.
In an agreed statement of facts the Crown read a description of a harrowing beating that lasted almost 24 hours. The victim was beaten, stabbed and slashed in the face. After keeping her captive in the home until the following afternoon, the man left and she escaped to a neighbour’s home and called 911. She was treated in hospital.
The accused said he didn’t remember assaulting his wife. He can’t be identified to protect the identity of the victim.
Following the admission the trial was temporarily suspended.
Defense lawyer Tony Ralston indicated the trial may continue and said she had only heard of the use of Lectopam that day and said she needed more time to investigate the drug’s affects.
Last week Ralston scheduled the trial to continue on Nov. 9. Three police officers who did not testify the first day may return to give evidence in November.
