Police lay charges in four brutal beatings on Eden Valley reserve
Violence on the Eden Valley Reserve escalated in January, resulting in six people being sent to hospital after they were attacked with everything from bats to chairs.
On Saturday police were called to their fourth call on the reserve west of Longview in one month involving a severe beating.
“This is a fairly common occurrence,” said Corp. Allen Busch of the Turner Valley RCMP.
According to police, at least four men broke into a home and beat two men inside with bats and a steel pole. The victims suffered broken bones. When their attackers left they went to a nearby home and called police. They were treated in a Calgary hospital and released.
Busch said the attack was targeted.
Charged in that beating is Conrad Lefthand, 20, Greig Lefthand, 34, and Robert Lefthand, 24, all of the Eden Valley Reserve. All three are facing upwards of 20 charges including aggravated assault. Conrad Lefthand was released, but Robert Lefthand remains in jail until he posts $1,000 bail.
Greig Lefthand was ordered remanded and made his first appearance in Okotoks Provincial Court Tuesday. He will return Feb. 16.
Police responded to a similar incident in Eden Valley on Jan. 14. Police have charged two men in the beating of two brothers who were speaking with someone outside a home in Eden Valley.
Witnesses told police two men came out of the house with clubs and bats and beat the men outside. One of the victims sustained serious injuries and required a prolonged stay in hospital for injuries to his legs.
“It escalated to extreme violence,” Busch said.
Dennis Frank Scott LEFTHAND,19, and Wilbert Kirk LEFTHAND, 31, are charged with aggravated assault and two counts of assault with a weapon. They were on release on other charges at the time and were ordered to stay away from each other and Wilbert Lefthand was ordered to have no weapons in his possession.
In both cases police said they are still trying to determine what prompted the attacks.
In two other attacks woman were the targets of attacks. In one case a man trapped, beat, stabbed and cut his common-law wife over eight hours.
In another situation a woman had a chair broken over her head.
