Town turns down housing site

3 February 2010 by Tamara Neely - Staff Reporter No Comments 713 views

A group of Turner Valley residents who objected to a proposed affordable housing development in their neighbourhood will not lose their green space after all.

Council decided on Jan. 18 the proposed location for the project on Anderson Crescent, including a connecting property behind it, is not suitable for single family home and six duplexes.

In December all the residents of Anderson Crescent — including Coun. Gary Rowntree — objected to a proposal to donate the land to the Foothills Foundation for the development of affordable housing.

Brent Lindblad, who organized the petition with 63 signatures, said losing the green space is the main reason they objected, but they are also concerned about how the affordable housing would affect their real estate value.

Heeding the residents’ objections, council asked Town planner Jonathan Yuen to see if the affordable housing project on Anderson Crescent could be accessed by the fire department and RCMP. In addition, Yuen was asked whether there are any other properties in town more suitable.

On Jan. 18 Yuen told council one of the lots would only be accessible by a back alley and suggested three other properties that would be appropriate: in the new Everwood Estates subdivision, the proposed Dunham Court area and on Edgar Avenue.

Turner Valley chief administrative officer Stan Ogrodniczuk will discuss the change with the Foothills Foundation.

An open house would be held for public input before a property is donated to the affordable housing project.
