Husband charged with beating his wife

27 January 2010 by Darlene Casten - Assistant Editor No Comments 4,007 views

A man who had allegations of domestic violence dropped against him last year is back behind bars for the same crime.

Turner Valley RCMP were called to the Eden Valley reserve Jan. 21 by a woman suffering from stab wounds, cuts and bruises.

She told police her common-law husband came home drunk and began an attack that lasted eight hours. During that time she was stabbed and cut as she tried to defend herself from the knife-wielding man. She also had a glass smashed on her head and was kneed and punched in the head and body.

The man refused to let her leave, but was scared away when somebody came to the home. The woman went to a nearby building and called 911.

Sgt. Jim Ross of the Turner Valley said the victim had serious injuries, including bone fractures, and was taken to a Calgary hospital, where she remains.

Police arrested the accused person in Black Diamond.

The same man faced similar charges stemming from a 2004 incident where a woman claimed she was beaten for three days and forced to stay in the home. Those charges were dropped in March 2009 when the woman refused to come to court and testify.

The accused, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, appeared by closed circuit television in Okotoks Provincial Court yesterday.

His bail hearing had to be delayed until Friday to give him time to obtain a lawyer.

Crown prosecutor Mac Vomberg told the court he intends to ask that the man not be given bail and wants to revoke his bail on other outstanding charges.
