Guilty plea in home invasion

3 March 2010 by Darlene Casten - Assistant Editor No Comments 433 views

A man who scared a mother who was in her home alone with her two small children will be sentenced in late April.

The Turner Valley mom heard noises in her kitchen and went to investigate when she found a man in her home and she attempted to get him out by beating him with a part from a vacuum cleaner. He was driven down a hallway, where he found a six-year-old sleeping in a bedroom. According to police he grabbed the child and shook it. He also threw the woman into a wall in the home. Eventually, he took a jacket and shoes from the home and fled. Police later arrested him in Black Diamond near the Oilfields Hospital.

During the man’s bail hearing the court was told he had taken a combination of Gravol, prescription drugs and alcohol and did not remember the incident. Police said he had been at the Oilfields Hospital earlier in the day. His lawyer said he has been a recovering alcoholic for a number of years, but began drinking again when a close relative died.

Tyrone Crawler of Morley is charged with break-and-enter, three counts of assault and possession of stolen property. Last week he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of being unlawfully in a dwelling house. No pleas were entered to the other charges.

Crawler will be interviewed by a psychologist and probation officer who will file reports with the court prior to his sentencing on April 28.
