Students help those in need

Grade 6 students at Good Shepard School in Okotoks are getting into the Christmas spirit by making scarves for the homeless.

On Dec. 18, four Grade 6 classes from the school donated 88 wool scarves to the Mustard Seed Ministry in Calgary.

Jeniece Dexter, a Grade 6 teacher at Good Shepard School, said students spent up to six weeks making the scarves.

“We get parents to help us out and the kids really catch on and even the boys end up really liking it,” said Dexter.

Getting young minds to focus on making scarves was not an easy task said Dexter but they persevered and finished the knitting. Some of the students learned to knit so well they made baby blankets and socks on their own.

“A lot of parents have been surprised, especially with the boys, how much they have enjoyed it and they really want to get it right so they are taking their time,” said Dexter.

All 88 scarves were donated along with toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap as a Christmas bundle.

“It’s a project where the students focus on serving others in the community,” said Dexter.
