A construction worker was on his first day on the job when he fell through a hole in the floor at an Okotoks school under renovation Wednesday.

Bayview Construction is remodeling Ecole Percy Pegler School in Okotoks. On Wednesday a 25-year-old worker fell from the second level to the floor below, a 20-foot drop.

Percy Pegler School in Okotoks is currently being renovated. A worker at the site was injured Wednesday when he fell through a hole on the second floor.

Const. Marc Michon of the Okotoks RCMP said the worker was backing away from a cloud of dust stirred up by another worker who was shoveling up concrete. He stepped in a hole that was partially covered by plywood and fell to the lower level of the school.

Elijah Bell, the site supervisor for Bayview Construction, said the injured worker had just been moved from a different project in Calgary to Okotoks that day.

Foothills Regional EMS paramedics stabilized the patient until STARS Air Ambulance arrived at the school, Michon said.

The victim was taken to Foothills Hospital in Calgary in critical condition.

Students from Ecole Percy Pegler School and Okotoks Junior High School were kept inside until the helicopter left. Percy Pegler students are attending classes in nearby modular classrooms and at the nearby junior high school while their school is under construction.

Percy Pegler principal Kathryn Strilchuk said students were kept safe while paramedics did their job.

Occupational Health and Safety is investigating the incident.

Bayview Constructors is known for skirting their responsibilities in terms of safety. OH&S should dig a little on these guys. I wonder if WCB was being provided for this worker??
