Opportunities to see classic movies on television are plentiful, but a chance to see the splendor of the old Hollywood classics projected on the huge screen in the theatre, with a bucket of movie popcorn in your lap are as rare as the exquisite Audrey Hepburn.
The Okotoks Cinemas has created a fun evening out that is a tribute to the golden oldies. Tonight (Wednesday) they are hosting A Night With the Classics, featuring the films Breakfast at Tiffany’s at 8 p.m. and The Wizard of Oz at 8:30 p.m.
There will be an intermission with live music and complimentary hors d’oeuvres prepared by the Foothills Composite High School professional cooking class.
Melissa Neis, projectionist at the Okotoks Cinemas, said she and staff at the cinema have organized the event to showcase two classic films and support the Okotoks Food Bank at the same time. Neis said 75 per cent of the ticket proceeds will be donated to the food bank.
“We’re going for an old-fashioned movie night,” said Neis, who will be performing jazz standards and other crooning songs for the guests at intermission. “And it’s helping out the community.”
Doors open at 7 p.m. and guests are invited to come early and chat with the other vintage film fans.
“People can come and enjoy the festivities,” said Neis. “We’ll have a free draw with movie passes and popcorn.”
Breakfast at Tiffany’s was released in 1961 and stars Audrey Hepburn as a quirky and lovable socialite.
“It’s a cute little love story,” said Neis. “I like the old-time romance and it ties into the holiday season — spending time with your spouse or your boyfriend and your family. The love — that’s what I like most about it.”
The Wizard of Oz is also a timely choice. Released in 1939, it’s the 70th anniversary of the beloved fairy tale. The film was released when colour talkies were still novel.
“I love it because of its musical numbers and I like the storyline. It’s fun. And I think any film is better on the big screen,” said Neis. “It captures you more. You feel like you’re more a part of the film than when you’re at home watching it on your television.”
Okotoks Cinemas presents A Night With the Classics tonight, Wednesday. Doors open at 7 p.m. Breakfast at Tiffany’s starts at 8 p.m. and The Wizard of Oz starts at 8:30 p.m.
Tickets are $12. Guests must be 14-years-old or older.
