The Okotoks Peewee B Wildcats lived up to Grantland Rice’s saying that when all is said and done, it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.
The Wildcats girls hockey team received the Okotoks Referees Association Sportsmanship Award in late February in recognition of playing Canada’s game with respect and dignity to officials, teammates and opposition.
“One of the things we stressed this season was to show good sportsmanship,” said Wildcats coach Hernan Iglesias. “We have a lot of girls who are of different ages on our team. It was nice to see everybody get along, despite such a difference in age.”
Doug Brown, the president of the Okotoks Referees Association said too often the negative side of how referees are treated gets all the attention.
He said it was important to recognize the efforts of the majority of young people, coaches and fans who treat the game with respect.
