Record number of locals qualify for Summer Games

One of the benefits of hosting the 2004 Alberta Summer Games is that it sparked a renewed interest in sports in local athletes which is evident in the number of locals who have qualified for the Alberta Summer Games.
Last Friday Alberta Sport and Rec released the names of the athletes who will represent Zone 2 (Big Country) at the 2004 Alberta Summer Games which will be held in Okotoks, High River and the MD of Foothills.
Competing on their home turf 124 athletes and 16 coaches from the foothills region will be participating the upcoming Summer Games.
Games chair Diane Turner said the record number of local athletes is a direct result of having the Summer Games at home.
“Because we are hosting the Games we had more local kids try-out (for the various events),” said Turner at the volunteer rally last Thursday in Okotoks.
The opportunity to win a Summer Games medal at home is indeed attractive for the local athletes.
“I am super excited that we are playing on our home field,” said Okotokian Jenna Seitz who will be playing the Big Country girl’s rugby team. “We are going to have an awesome team.”
Dan Yavis, who is playing for the Zone 2 men’s volleyball team, said the chance to play in such a prestigious event at home is a rare opportunity.
“It is going to be great because there will be so many people watching,” he said. “The chance to play at home is a pretty good bonus.”
For 13-year-old Travis Morrow of Okotoks he said competing in front of the home fans will not mean added pressure.
“No, I am not really nervous, I am excited,” said the BMX cyclist. “But this is the biggest competition I have ever been to.”
Morrow, Yavis and Seitz will not be alone as they face their nerves next week.
Joining the trio will be more than 100 other athletes.

WE ARE READY!

Volunteers, committee members and co-ordinators hand out volunteer packages and register new volunteers at the highly successful volunteer rally last Thursday at the Murray Arena in Okotoks. The rally was a final push to attract more volunteers to help with the 2004 Alberta Summer Games which will take place July 22-25 in High River, Okotoks and the MD of Foothills. It is estimated that about 1,500 volunteers have registered. For more information on volunteering call the Games office at 652-3005. photo by John Barlow
