Tuck is new Turner Valley mayor

By Lynn Sketchley
Staff Reporter

Kelly Tuck knocked on doors and listened to what the residents of Turner Valley had to say and it paid off.

Tuck was named the mayor elect after a three-way race Monday.

'I feel really good,' said a jubilant Tuck after hearing the election results.

Tuck received 182 votes, just 18 votes more than mayor hopeful Marjorie Straub who had 164 votes and Gil Howell, who had 146 votes, according to the unofficial results Monday night.

Tuck decided to throw her name into the mayoral race after former mayor Elaine Dafoe stepped aside to pursue a seat on the Headwaters Health Authority board.

Tuck attributes the win to her door-to-door campaign and said she is sorry she was unable to visit every home because of a time factor. However, she stressed the importance of talking to people face to face.

'I always listen and I think that's so important,' said Tuck. 'I'm very personable. I say what I feel, right or wrong.'

Although Straub needed only 18 votes for the win, she said the results reflect what the electorate wanted. 'Whatever the people want is fine with me,' she said Monday night.

Howell was unavailable for comment before press time.

Joining Tuck on council will be incumbents Bev Goble, Shannon Kiiskinen and Archie Holmes. New to council will be Teresa Dujay, Eileen Pool and Blair McArthur.

Larry Usselman received 225 votes, just 13 votes fewer than newly elected councillor Blair McArthur. Cheryle Dobbyn, who had 203 votes, needed 35 more to gain a seat.

Tuck said she looks forward to working with the new council and congratulates them on a job well done.

During her campaign Tuck said challenges facing the new council would be, among others, the posted traffic speed on main street. The street is also a highway which poses a problem for children playing in the nearby park.

'We have a swimming pool, a roller park, a rec centre and a park that is designated for children (and close to main street),' said Tuck explaining the need for a reduced speed zone.

In a previous interview, Tuck also stated that another issue council will have to deal with in the next three years is new housing development within the town.

Recount ordered for Christ the Redeemer

By John Barlow
Staff Reporter and Sports Editor

Incumbent David Lunn and challenger Erna Ference will have to wait another day to find out who won the Christ the Redeemer School Division (CRSD) election in electoral subdivision #6 .

Unofficially, the results after Monday's election showed Lunn won the race by the slimmest of margins edging Ference by just three votes 142 to 139.

However, since the results were so tight, the returning officer has ordered a recount that, as of Monday, had not been scheduled.

Ken Power, spokesman for CRSD, said the results would likely be released late Tuesday or Wednesday (today) morning.

In the meantime, the candidates are anxiously waiting the results of the recount.

'I am still holding out some hope,' said Ference. 'There is still a chance (I can win).'

While both candidates were stunned to see that just three votes separated them, they agreed they expected the race to be close.

'Erna ran a good hard campaign,' said Lunn. 'I respect her and the hard work she and her team did during the election.'

Win or lose, Ference said she is pleased with the results considering she was up against an incumbent who has been with the division for 12 years.

'The election was a real positive experience,' said the challenger. 'I was the underdog and I think we did very well.'

Lunn said he expected Ference to be a worthy opponent and he was not disappointed.

He added that regardless of who wins the recount, the division will be in good hands.

'Whoever wins this election will do a commendable job for the division,' said Lunn.

The results of the CRSD election must be made official by noon on Friday.
